The DTC100 was the first Direct TV High Definition Satellite  TV Receivers to hit the market with force. Although it's design is "old", (in today's electronics lingo that means more than 2 weeks ago). These are still around and we find them to be a robust product. The feature a little unique on this HD receiver is that it delivers it's HD picture via a standard VGA Jack. All satellite receivers we service get their power supply rebuilt and then their problems fixed. (Symptom: A bad power supply whistles when cold.)  The most likely circuit to need repaired is the LNB power circuit. Set-Up Notes

The HD Receiver shown is Hughes HIRD-E8. This satellite TV receiver is a Hughes because it has a Hughes bezel on it. If we were to change the bezel it would be hard to tell that it wasn't a Mitsubishi HD-5, or a Toshiba DST-3000. The circuit board is identical in all three models. The biggest problem we see with these is the operator. These units, and virtually all HD units currently in the field, output their picture through either the HD Jacks or the standard RCA Jacks BUT NOT BOTH AT THE SAME TIME. If the unit changes from HD mode to standard mode (which can happen via a reset or software download), it will  appear there is no picture.  These units will overheat and fail. Make sure they have good air flow. We also see some tuner degradation from the heat of the unit. This is repairable. Direct TV repair is our specialty. We feel the tuners on this Satellite Receiver (both terrestrial and satellite), when not overheated, are the best in the industry.  Set-Up Notes

  The Sony HD-100 is a very sophisticated unit. It takes a very good technician to fix these. Fortunately, CCS has several very good technicians. We see units returned where the complexity of the outputs appears to have overwhelmed the user. Make sure you understand what output is being enabled before you decide you have no picture. We do see some tuner failures but basically a solid performer.

Is a TRIPLE LNB required to watch High Definition Programs?

Yes, and No. A triple LNB picks up ALL channels Direct TV has to offer. You can watch some HD programming with just a double LNB. Direct TV broadcasts from three satellite locations: "A" is @ 101°, "B" is @ 119° and "C" @ 110°

Notice that the "C" LNB is in the middle. Not on the end. If you have only one LNB it is the "A". This is the satellite sending most of the common channels. The "B" LNB is generally used for local channels. However, some of the High Definition channels are broadcast on "B". If you have a double LNB you can get some HD programming on your HDTV receiver. Available HD programming on the "B" satellite:

HDNet on Channel 79, PPV HD on 85, HBO HD on 88, and HBO HD on 509 (88 and 509 are the same program at all times).

The "C" LNB is required to get ESPN HD on 73, Discovery HD on 76, HDNet Movies on 81, Showtime HD on 91 or 543 (same programs).

Note: Direct TV can change these whenever they like. They don't ask our advice so this info could become dated.

All of the unit pictured on this page are capable or receiving Satellite TV as well as Off-air High Definition broadcasts. Satellite TV local feeds are not sent in High Definition format. If an Off-Air antenna will get your locals in High Definition, we would encourage you to do both for the greatest versatility in your Audio/Video enjoyment.

To toggle output from High Definition VGA Jack to Standard Definition jacks

(S-Video, Video or Out to TV) Press the "HD Monitor" button on your front panel.

A TRIPLE LNB is required to get all HDTV offered by Direct TV .

The unit needs to know the LNB configuration for proper operation. To check or change:

1. Main Menu
2. Assistance
3. Dish Pointing
4. Select Dish (next for triple LNB)

All systems are tested and leave our facility set to TRIPLE

If dish type is not set correctly the symptom will be a "no program guide" message.

Off-Air (antenna) High Definition channels local to your area should be scanned for:

1. Main Menu
2. System Options
3. Channel Search
4. Full Search

To toggle output from High Definition jacks (Y, Pb, Pr) to Standard Definition jacks

(S-Video, Video or Out to TV)

1. Press the "Guide & Up buttons on your front panel. (Or on remote press "Action" then "HD/SD")

Dolby Digital Audio Out Jack (fiber optic output) is enabled/disabled by going three menus deep.

1. Main menu
2. Setup menu
3. A\V setup

A TRIPLE LNB is required to get all HD channels offered by Direct TV.

The unit needs to know the LNB configuration for proper operation. To check or change:

1. Main Menu
2. Setup Menu
3. Installation
4. Dish setup
5. Dish type

If dish type is not set correctly the symptom will be a "no program guide" message.

Off-Air (antenna) High Definition channels local to your area should be scanned for:

1. Main Menu
2. Setup Menu
3. Installation
4. Local area
5. Scan

Yes, these units do appear to run hot. They all do. CCS cannot warranty units that are not given free airflow. We also recommend no cabinet installation without an added fan. Symptoms of overheating are loss of some channels (off-air or Satellite) and or transponders.
